Growing a Business While Working a 9 to 5

My name is Hennither Gant and one of the things I love to do is teach HR Professionals,

aka HRpreneurs, how to turn their HR skills into a profitable business.

I got into HR almost two decades ago, I felt like it was my calling. Now after all this time,

I realize how impactful this field is. I’ve worked for different companies before and touched all areas of HR. There are many things that I would say I’m not good at, but HR is not one of them. I am great at HR.

I took a leap of faith and decided to start my own business. I was so nervous to start my own HR company. I registered my business, but I didn’t do anything with it because of my fear. I was afraid of success because if I succeeded then I would have to leave my comfort zone. I was taking a leap of faith. I was leaving what I was good at and what I was comfortable with to do what God had called me to do.

I didn’t know that just knowing HR wasn’t going to be enough to run a business. I quickly

learned the business of HR is what I needed the most help with. I started asking around and asking questions, but the reality of it was no one wanted to let me in. Some people would talk to me, but others would basically close the door in my face. It was like asking for grape juice and someone just giving you a grape. I made so many mistakes that it has put me in a position to do things right.

I realized how beneficial it was to have your own company. I would run into some of my

friends with businesses and though conversation, I realized that they needed HR services. That opened a door for me. I started offering advice and creating packages to offer to my friends. They believed in me enough to pay for my services. I then started offering my services to small businesses.

Soon after, I realized there are working professionals, as well as business owners that I

can offer my services to. There is a big difference between working professionals and business owners. With working professionals, I could respond to their inquiries and questions in my free time or during the evenings and weekends when I wasn’t working at my full-time job because they would also be at work during that time. Whereas with business owners, they expected a response during the day or during normal business hours. That was a challenge for me, and I realized that I needed to get some help. I went looking for additional help on Facebook and I found another person who worked on resumes in my area. We met at Panera Bread to discuss a partnership – that person is now my husband. Who would’ve thought!

Working in HR, you get the capacity to impact someone’s life, whether it's working on

employee benefits, how much they are getting paid, whether or not they get fired, how layoffs are going to be, all different types of things. We get to influence the decisions that impacts someone’s livelihood. So, it has been my absolute pleasure to work with other integrity filled HR Professionals who don’t just want to do HR, but they want to impact lives.

Throughout that experience, I have been able to capture all of that information and put it

into a course. Now I teach other HR Professionals, aka HRpreneurs, how to start their own HR Consulting Companies.
